The Problem

Windsor Christian came to me looking for professional branding to connect their school to the church, while also being adaptable across multiple applications. They also had performance and branding issues with their outdated, difficult-to-navigate websites.

In order to identify and understand the problems with their current website and branding, I interviewed a variety of users via Microsoft Teams. I created an empathy map by noting the following:

  • what they said about their use of the website and branding

  • what they did while using the website and branding

  • what they felt while using the website and branding (by observing reactions)

  • and infer, based on the above, what they may have been thinking

Plotting the findings onto an empathy map, I synthesized the data to create a concise problem statement.

The Solution

The above guided the approach as we generated ideas that would solve the problems discovered. The solutions identified ranged from creating a clear visual identity that connected both branches of the organization to creating a smoother onboarding process for both; from establishing a content strategy and establishing roles for upkeep to boosting compliance with ADA standards.

For the website, I immediately created a simplified onboarding task flow that reduced steps and friction. I then helped ensure processes worked with defined user flows for key tasks like finding events and curriculum. These flows were reflected to the review team with lo-fi wireframes.

For branding, I took the review team through a multi-round process. We started with several basic black and white icon options, then honed in on colors, fonts, and layout design. This process gathered feedback and funneled in on a design that would visually reflect Windsor Christian in the eyes of key stakeholders. As the visual identity became finalized, I reflected these decisions into hi-fi wireframes of the designed website pages.

Throughout the design process, I completed a series of task tests and desirability tests. This helped me gather qualitative and quantitative data that led to honing in on even better solutions.

The Result

The branding and website received overwhelmingly positive feedback from users, who praised its improved usability, engaging design, and easy-to-navigate features. Using design thinking, we grew in understanding of the users, their problems/needs, and challenged assumptions about solutions, creating a successful product for onboarding and engagement that will serve the Windsor Christian community.
